Spiritual CareMorning Pages Journal: Part of “The Artist’s Way”

“The Artist’s Way: a Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity” by Julia Cameron, is a wonderful book with exceptional exercises to help the artist within everyone discover their true creativity by connecting with real self.  In particular, the Morning Pages Journal exercise, which merits it’s own companion book separate from The Artist’s Way, is a masterful way to begin each day by connecting with spirit.

By doing this type of journaling you are engaging in a personal and intimate relationship with yourself. The secrets you share are for your eyes only. The journal becomes your companion to keep you intrigued about life and living; to keep you amused; to help you recognize where beliefs come from that block your conscious creative process; and to help you uncover emotional and mental challenges forgotten but not totally absent.

So here’s how this free flowing exercise allows you to be present and become consciously aware of your thoughts.

  • Use a journal book separate from any other journals you might have.
  • First thing in the morning write every thought, idea, random ramblings and thought processes passing through your mind.
  • Leave nothing out. There is nothing too big or too insignificant to write down.
  • Keep writing until your mind is empty; or at least until you have filled three pages.
  • Once you have completed writing if you have time, take another few minutes to an hour for meditation. This will help you become completely centered and open to your full spirit self. (This last step is my added instruction)

At the completion of this exercise allow yourself to become fully open to the dynamic essence of self and the quiet peaceful nature that lies within you.  From the silent place of simply connecting with you, spirit comes through where you become very present in a consciously creative process.  Enjoy this process as you experience who you are and all the ways in which you beautifully create in the world.
