With the advent of the Trump victory we hear a lot about the peaceful transfer of power and how it is a hallmark of democratic government. For not all transfers of power are peaceful. One of my life rules is whatever is happening or occurring out there is also happening in here. That is what is an outer phenomenon is too an inner one. And these outer and inner experiences can guide us and help us learn how to live a meaningful and vibrant life right where we are in the here and now. Which is exactly where the action is.
For when we think about the concept, it is not only a political ritual where the outgoing administration hands over the wheels of power to the newly elected one. But it also happens in business. When old employees are let go and new ones are hired. Or when a business is sold to a new owner. It also happens in the educational world, and scientific, and the fields of art and culture and entertainment. In fact, we can see the transfer of power in all human endeavors. Sometimes it is peaceful, at other times violent. Sometimes it is reluctant and other times it is graceful. But in all these cases we see that we are not the owners of power but the field where we experience this power and only for a time. We are caretakers of power.
We also see this peaceful transfer of power in the natural world as well. For example, day gives way to night in a peace transfer of power. And so too does one season give way to the next. One electron transfers power to another to produce a different molecule. In fact, without this transfer of power nothing can change.
In addition, our spiritual heroes speak of a peaceful transfer of power. Jesus talks about the Kingdom of God where we take implements of war and change them into tools for agriculture. He talks about this realm as a realm of peace where war and sickness and strife cease. He seems to say that a peaceful transfer of power is possible.
The Buddha also talks about the experience of nirvana as one where suffering can give way to enlightenment in a peaceful transfer of power and we can be at peace with all of life. And he seems to say that if this transfer of power is not peaceful not only will it not be sustainable but it will be an illusion of change where nothing really changes.
So, as we witness president elect Trump and president Obama work on their own peaceful transfer of power it can offer us an opportunity to reflect on our own peaceful transfer of power. What power or life experiences or thoughts or dreams or disappointments are we letting go of so that a new power can greet us and renew us and cause us to be reborn.
